Sun room quick makeover

There's a shabby little sun room attached to the back of the house that we plan to remove when we extend the kitchen. It really is an ugly duckling, but I have to admit that it has been very useful so far. I used it as my studio for a while until we had a proper space built at the bottom of the garden last Spring, which freed up the space. We're not going to do anything with the kitchen just yet, so I thought I might as well 'tart up' this little room and enjoy it...

So, it started like this before the clear out and the relocation of my tools and stock in my new studio

Old studio space

Years of neglect had left the walls filthy, the corrugated plastic roof covered in unsightly moss and the floor vinyl yucky. I gave it all a good scrub with sugar soap, which also got rid of the musty smell. I tried using moss remover (basically bleach) on the roof but it would need changing altogether, and I don't want to spend any money on this really.

Sunroom before

I used leftover tins of Farrow and Ball Light Grey Masonry paint for the brick wall and breeze block skirting, Off-Black Exterior Eggshell for the wooden frame, Pitch Black Eggshell on the door and window and Annie Sloan Graphite Chalk Paint for the floor (straight onto the lino) that I then varnished.

To hide that ugly ceiling without blocking the light, I draped natural French muslin fabric. I just love how it gives a bohemian feel to the space.

I moved in bits and pieces found in junk shops, nothing too fragile or precious as it does get freezing cold and damp during winter months and it's not a secure place in any way. It really is nothing more than a garden shed. I'm slowly filling it in with plants and herbs, of course, hoping for a jungle in a few months time!

Plants have been happy and blossoming rapidly in there, and I can enjoy my garden just this little bit longer protected from the elements. It has given a lovely calm spot to enjoy breakfast or a glass of vino in the evening where I can pretend I'm in a gipsy roulotte...

It has also now doubled up as a photo studio where I can shoot my creations without having to constantly move furniture around inside the house. Bonus.

I hope you're all making the most of the sudden outburst of sunshine we're having. Have a lovely weekend!
